Overview

Welcome to this art history book which is Italy. Visiting the country is like learning the history of our old world!

With over 16,000 km of railway tracks, Italy has an excellent rail network. The national railway company in Italy is known as Trenitalia. The company operates high speed trains as well as regional trains. The Italian high speed trains are known as Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca. Italy is the first country in Europe to welcome privately operated high speed trains called Italo, which are operated by the NTV railway company. Thanks to international high speed trains, Italy has connections with France and Switzerland. Thello nigh trains operate between Paris and Rome as well as between Paris and Venice.

Experience the romance, history and culture of Italy by train. Whether it is Milano’s fashion boutiques, Venezia’s romantic canals or Roma’s antique vestiges, the excellent high speed railway network of Italy offers the easiest and yet the best value for money option to travel the country in a short period of time.

High speed trains such as the Frecciarossa or the Frecciargento, which operate at a speed of 300km/h, come with all the comfort and safety that a modern train can offer. Depending on the class of service, onboard facilities include spacious seats, power sockets, Wi-Fi Internet, audio systems, LCD screens, bar-buffet or restaurant cars.

Italy’s rail network has several entry points which are local and international hubs. Travelling from nearby European countries, Milan can be reached in only 1 hour from Lugano (Switzerland), Genoa in just over 3 hours from Nice (France) and Turin in 4 hours and 15 minutes from Lyon (France).

From those entry points, you can continue your journey to discover the jewels of Italy. With popular routes such as Turin-Milan (1h trip), Milan-Venice (2h23), Venice-Florence (2h03) and Florence-Rome (1h24 trip), trains have become the best way to discover Italy, all of Italy!

Cityscape

The train’s network is well developed so you can easily visit Rome and its historical monuments and then go by train to experience Firenze Renaissance architecture. Discover Venice’s canal, a perfect and romantic destination if you go in couple. Reach Naples to test the best pizzas in the world, or hop in train to Milan, the Italy’s fashion capital.

Landscape

From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the water buffalo of Campania, the diversity of the Italian landscape will wow you. If you prefer basking the sun, go to Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda and enjoy the turquoise waters. Heritage lovers, why don’t you get a train to Sicily to explore ancient Greek theatres?

Take home

Be thrilled with designer labels in Milan; buy some well-known hand-blown Murano glass in the beautiful Venice. If you like wines, bring back some bottles of the red Brunello, from Montalcino, Tuscany. If you go to Umbria, painted ceramics can be a perfect gift.

Eat & Drink

Sardinia’s seafood risotto or bistecca alla florentina, buffalo mozzarella or Tuscan steaks are just so many dishes you can feast with. If you stay in Northern Italy, try some truffles and porcini mushrooms. If you are in the south, test the fiori di Zucchini, it is just delightful.

New Perspective

In Liguria, have a one of the kind memory boarding on train to see the sunset on traditional tiny villages of Cinque Terre region.

    Great train, great ride |
"Arrival at Napoli centrale is a tad daunting as it is huge and on multiple levels, but the track layout and boarding procedure is simple and easy for international travellers to understand and use, the carriages are very clean and clearly marked with plenty of leg and arm room, we did a majority of our travel within Europe via the railway system and every ride was enjoyable and memorable but this ride had mount Vesuvius outside our window and the view for the remainder of the trip was just as memorable, the upside of our ride, we were travelling at 296kph at one stage, down side, travelling at 296kph you get to your destination to soon. All up it was an excellent trip and I recommend this service to everyone wondering how they will get from point A to B whilst travelling through Italy. "
